"I recently had the pleasure of spending time at the Camelot rooming house in Salt Lake City, I was working on a project for Sarcos a medical and robots research group at the Univ of Utah. I live in California and travel a lot, so the idea of spending months in a hotel just wasn't what I wanted. I had never looked for a rooming house but knowing I was going to be near the Univ I thought I would just give it a try.
While looking through craigslist.com I found a posting for the Camelot, I bounced a few e-mails back and forth with Arthur. After a few more phone calls I thought why not, so I moved in and I have to say it turned out better then I had hoped. The people were friendly the location could not have been better, within a few blocks there is just about everything you could want, shopping, restaurants, parks, light rail, a "GREAT" city library, and my favorite two excellent coffee bars. If you have never been Salt Lake like me the city is very walker and transit friendly, which makes the location of the Camelot excellent. I had driven a car out but could have done without it.
That other stuff you might want to know Arthur the owner lives on site and is a very up-front guy, it's the kind of place your mother would approve of.
I would recommended this anyone needing to spend time in Salt Lake, I know that if he has space Arthur will rent rooms for a few days I think he is listed in the Hostel Guild.

Application & Bookings

Do you rent to people who have children?

Do you rent to people who have pets?
Only certain pets; here is our pet policy:

2- If staying for one or two nights, pay $50 incidental fee, with $35 refundable ($15 cleaning fee).

4- You have to pay in advance (cannot bring your pet unannounced).

Do you rent to felons or approve applicants with misdemeanors?
No; Anyone with a criminal record, please do not apply. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.

Hey do you have any smoking rooms??
No. Please make sure you smoke outside in the designated smoking area or 25 feet away from any window or door (Utah law), to avoid any additional charges to your card. If a room smells like tobacco or if you smoke in the room, there will be an extra $200 cleaning fee for smoking in the room.

How do I rebook a room?
1) E-mail or call us for availability;
2) If you are available in the morning (after 9 a.m.), you can email us with how many nights, arrival date, the last 4 digits of the card you booked with previously, and room type

-or-
3) If you are using a different credit card, you must rebook the room online at

Note: option 2) saves you a booking fee.

How can I see one of the rooms?
You can see pictures of some example rooms at www.UT123.com, or pay a $5 non-refundable showing fee: (1) We show rooms by appointment only, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (2) Please give us one hour notice. (3) Before seeing the room, you have to fill out an application and be approved.

I am between homes. Do you have a room or dorm bed in any of your properties that would be available for someone in my situation? I'm looking for my least expensive alternative. How much would it cost?
Yes we do, you can get prices and you can book here with a credit card. We rent all the time to people who are between homes. This allows you time to make sure you move into a good situation without having to rush into a bad roommate or long lease.

I looked through the profile form that I have to fill in before booking a room, but the thing is that I don't know yet what time I arrive in SLC. May I write an approximate time?
Yes you may write an approximate time, as long as you check-in after 3 p.m. The time requested by the booking engine is just so we can know more or less at what time you will be checking in the room.

I'm interested and was wondering if you could call me and feed me a little more information.
Please go to our website at www.UT123.com and look for your answers there...if afterwards you still have questions then please e-mail us any specific questions.

Is there a phone number I can call to get some more information?
If we cannot answer your questions through our website (www.UT123.com) or through e-mail, then we'll call you.

Next time I come back, do I need to book again?
Only if you are using a different credit card; if you are using the same credit card as last time you stayed with us, then we can make the booking for you, without you having to book again through the booking engine (that charges you a booking fee). We will make the booking for you and e-mail/text you a new reference number(s).

My credit card is Visa Classic and I have only US dollars on it (but it said on you website that a booking fee of 1.00 EUR will be required) So I hope I can book a room with this card?
Yes, you can book the room with any card that has dollars or any other currency.

Q: What is the most efficient method to check availability, e-mail or phone?
A: Always better to e-mail us at UT123.com@hotmail.com
the dates and specifics for the booking (number of people, and types of rooms needed); this information will allow us to correctly and quickly check online availability. Only call us at (801) 688-6196 during business hours if it is an emergency.

Why can't I book a room after hours?
All the other hostels in SLC have their office closed after hours- we do the same. Hotels book rooms late at night, not budget accommodations like our guest houses.

Why did you cancel my booking and give my room away? I turned up at your hostel only to be sent away, especially when I arrived at 9 p.m. at night.
We are a small Hostel and we do not overbook. So when so
meone's card is declined, we have to cancel the booking so others can book. We run our Hostel via internet, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. after that time we do not process bookings for the same day. This is why travelers book in advance, we charge their card and then they can do their own self check-in.

Why do you charge $6.00 extra if I am a walk-in (pay in person)?
When you pay in person it costs $6.00 more than if you book online. I am sure you can understand that it takes less work for us to process an online booking than a walk-in booking. Online bookings cost $6.00 less than if you pay in person or over the phone.

My wife and I are waiting for an apartment to open up. Can we book an extended stay at the Camelot in the meantime?
Extended stay is for one person only; not for couples or families.

It will be about two days until I have use of a computer to book in the way that you suggest. I definitely do want a room...Can you hold the room for me until I have use of the internet?
We only hold rooms with: (1) a booking, and (2) a payment charged to the card, 4 nights before your arrival date. Please double check when ready to book, via email, text or phone call.

I am self-employed. Do I qualify?
No, self-employed guests do not qualify to stay with us, because they stay in the house all day long, and we don't allow that. Our policy is that you have to have an occupation: student, traveler, working out of the house for a company, etc.

Check-in

How do I use the quick check-in PC?
After 3 p.m., on your arrival date, you can use your confirmation/booking number to get your room number and keybox combination from the quick check-in computer inside the hostel. It's as easy as 1 2 3 4 5 . 1) Open the Internet browser, 2) Type in your booking reference number, 3) Get your room number and keybox combination.

No other guest house that I know of, has this quick check-in system; A few hotels have started to successfully integrate this revolutionary system- they are using "Self-service kiosks in hotel lobbies". The quick check-in system is similar to the check-in kiosks you find in the airport. Our travelers love it; You can check-in at 12 a.m., 2 a.m., or any other time (after 3 p.m.) without having to consult a staff member. If you have difficulty checking in, the concierge or one of the management will help you.

“This is really a cool hostel (guest house), the new creative check-in system is just like playing a treasure finding game! I think this place is even more than a hostel. It also trains you to self-discipline and resolve the problems independently. It is in a very convenient location and has complete equipment, including kitchen, laundry, WiFi... you just can't miss such a cool place and a self test!” -Jacob Hsu, Taichung, Taiwan

I learned that the check-in facility you have is usually not manned by any people (and that I will be communicating with a computer for check-in). In this regard I had some concerns:
1. Do I need to furnish any particular information to the computer while checking in?
Yes- the computer will ask you for your booking (or reference) number. Here are a few examples: 958-123-M-2007, 12701-1234567, 17766-1234567, etc: 69100515. You get this number when you make your online booking; it's also emailed to you later, by us. FYI: We do have staff cleaning rooms and processing bookings, at certain hours of the day.
2. Also, we will be checking out at around 3:00 or 4:00 AM the next day. So, is it possible to perform the checkout through that computer as well?
No need to use the computer; the self checkout instructions are inside your room and/or posted in the common areas. Using the PC is optional- only if you wish to leave a comment.
3. Further, in case we have any issues in our hotel room (common examples : lights not working etc.) who would we be calling to get
such issues fixed?

801-688-6196 . NOTE: If you get an answering machine, please leave a message, and wait for at least 15 minutes.

I want to make a reservation for Sunday night. However, after tomorrow morning I won't have access to e-mail until I arrive in SLC. How can I get any codes that I will need?
As soon as you make a reservation, the booking engine will give you the address, directions, and keyless code to get in the building (the building is always locked). Once in the building, you will have access to a PC with free Internet, that will allow you to access your e-mail account and get your express self check-in instructions (room number and keycode).
Note: The self check-in instructions are e-mailed to you after we charge your credit card.

I will arrive in SLC at midnight (I will travel by Amtrak from Chicago) will that be to late  to check-in to the room?
No, it will not be too late to check-in to the room after midnight; you can use the automated self check-in system, as long as you can book the room with your own valid credit card that has your name on it (no prepaid cards); we charge your credit card four days prior to your arrival.

I will get there very late at night, will I be able to check-in?
Yes, as long as you remember to write down two things: 1) The building entrance code and 2) Your confirmation number. You'll need these to get in the building and use the quick check-in computer.

Is your guest house 24 hours? If our flight comes in at 1 a.m., and a few days later we must leave at 4 a.m., is this going to be a problem?

No problem, because you can check-in anytime after 3 p.m., by using our self quick check-in computer (for online bookings only, no walk-ins) ; and you can check-out anytime by following the simple self-checkout instructions on the yellow sheet, outside your room door.

Flying in, so I could be later?
No problem, as long as you:
1) Know the entrance code,
2) Know your booking number,
3) We can charge your card for the amount due + taxes and fees, within 3 nights of your arrival.

My plane arrives at 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday night. So, I'll probably be about 2:45 a.m. before I get over there. Do I just sneak into my dorm room quietly?
What I've noticed that works really well is if you have a cell phone that has a decent back light on it. The lamplight is good but if you really want to be discreet, a small light really does the job.

What time can we check-in to the building and into our room? Can I check in before 3 p.m.?
You can only check-in to the building and into your room after 3 p.m. If you need to check-in earlier or need to store your luggage, then please e-mail us ASAP at UT123.com@hotmail.com
. Most rooms are occupied before new guests arrive, we need to allow time for previous traveler(s) to checkout and we need enough time to make sure the room is ready for new guests. If you really need to check-in the room very early in the morning, then you can pay for the previous night. We also charge a $6.00 early check in fee, if you are checking in between 11am and 3pm. If the room is vacant, then you may be able to check-in at 10am after a $6.00 fee.

When do I get the directions and conditions to the property?
Right after you book the room with a credit card, the booking engine shows you the directions and property conditions; you'll have the entrance code to get in the building that will allow you to do your own express self check-in. This way if you have to leave on your trip, you already know how to get in the building (you have the keyless code to the building); there is a computer with free Internet that will allow you to check your e-mail to get the room number and key code to your booked room.

Why do I need to pay an extra $6.00 for booking over the phone?
You are paying an extra five dollars because your booking is not an online booking.

The self check-in is not accepting the booking number, but I got a reference number and it went through so there must be a bed available?
Because you didn't ask if you could book the room, and you didn't book in advance. In the description of the room type it says "before you book please check availability."

Checkout

Can I stay in the building after the 10 a.m. check-out time?
No. After 10 a.m. you need to checkout of the room and the building. We need to get everything ready for our guests that will be checking in later in the day. We charge an extra $6.00, for every additional hour you stay in the building (before 11 a.m.= $6.00, before 12 p.m. = $11.6, etc.

Can I extend my booking after 10 a.m.?
No. You cannot stay in the room without a new booking; If you don't book before your 10 a.m. checkout time, you'll need to pay a late extension fee from $5 to $20 (depending how late you extend).

I forgot my keybox code!?
To get keybox code again- please type your original booking number in one of the check-in computers (just like you did when you checked in).

What time do we have to check out of the room?
Checkout by 10 a.m.. If you need to stay longer please let us know before 10 a.m. so we can check for availability.

What is your cancelation policy?
=====================
Cancellations:
=====================
Must be made at least 48 hours before your scheduled arrival day. If you miss this deadline, we are entitled to charge the equivalent of the first night of your booked nights. Cancellations or changes made after check-in are subject to a 100% charge.
No refunds for unused nights, including those resulting from delayed check-in or early check-out will be given.

Is there anyway this can be considered a 48 hour notice
No. 48hrs notice does not apply to you. You agreed to absolutely no refunds, after you moved in, when you signed the credit card form that we have on file.

I would like to leave a comment. Is there a button on the testimonial page? I think I'm missing it.
You can email/text us your comment (for us to post on our website) or leave a comment with www.Hostelz.com.

Is there a fee if I lost my key or got locked out of my room?
Yes: $20 to $40 service call fee.

Credit Card

Can we mail you a check instead?
We do not accept checks, only credit and debit cards.

Do you have a credit card authorization form?
Yes, click here to download, print, and fax (call first to arrange a time to send fax).

Do I need a credit card to make a reservation?
YES. The booking has to be made with your own credit card that has your name on it; NO: cash, pre-paid cards, unemployment cards, employment cards, someone else's card or anyone with a criminal record.

Do you require payment in advance?
We only hold rooms with a booking and guarantee of funds; we need to be able to authorize the total amount due + taxes and fees, within four nights of your arrival. If we cannot obtain a payment guarantee (declined credit card)- your booking will be canceled. Exceptions may be granted to international travelers with a passport (not to locals or US residents)- you need to contact us for an approval.

Do you provide any invoice or receipt for my accommodation at Camelot Inn? If you do, can you email it to me?
Right after we charge your card, we send you an email receipt. If you want something different than this, we have to charge you an extra $6.00 for a different digital receipt. We never provide paper receipts.

I'd like to book a private room; I prefer not to use my credit card by Internet, because I think it's not secure. Is it possible to make the reservation by fax?
Yes it is possible to book the room by fax. Please do the following: (1) Print out a credit card authorization form (or click here for a jpg image), completely fill it out, sign, and date it; (2) Fax us a copy of the "Authorization to charge credit card" so we can charge your card, secure you a room, and then e-mail you the confirmation and necessary information for you to do your express self-check-in.

If I use my credit card, will it be charged right away or will it be charged when I arrive and check in?
It will be authorized (amount frozen on your card) within four nights of your arrival, so that we can send you the codes that will allow you to do your own express self check-in. Notice to Debit Card User: By submitting your debit card as a method of payment you are authorizing an approval to be secured on your checking account. The amount of the approval will be deducted from your checking account and thus reduce your available balance.

Is paying by credit card secure?
Absolutely. We are very highly aware of the absolute security of your personal dates, especially of your credit card details. All your personal details are 100% encrypted when transferred over the Internet. If you are afraid of sending the number of your credit card by Internet, you do not have to be. Just fill in all details, print the reservation form out and send it with your signature by fax (call 801-688-6196 first); You can also give this information to our reservation department on number: 801-688-6196.

I've made a reservation and just want to know when will be the payment?
We will authorize your card within four nights of your arrival. You have to pay before you can check-in. If you want us to capture the amount now- you will have to fax us a credit card authorization form, allowing us to authorize and capture now, the amount due with taxes and fees.

I've just never had to go through anything like this to book a hostel!?
We are different than other hostels- we are a Hostel and an Inn with a self-check in system.

I don't have a credit card, just a pre-paid debit card.
(1) We would have to meet you face-to-face (to see if we can make an exception) and (2) you'd have to pay a $50 deposit. If interested, please call on Monday morning after 9am to set up an appointment.

It won't take my credit card number, but I know the card is good. Any suggestions?
You can pay over the phone, for an extra $6.00 phone fee.

Q1: (Saturday) I entered my information 3 times and it's not accepting it. 4 times....also checked my balance and there is more than enough in my account. I tried for a fifth time and it kicked me out and said too many attempts. I don't understand either, I use my card for things all the time and it works fine.
A1: We can call you. There's an extra $6.00 phone fee to book over the phone.
Q2: That doesn't seem fair. So you're gonna charge me extra because your website isn't working.
A2: FYI we get bookings from that booking engine all the time. I don't know why you can't book there?!
Q3: (Monday) So my credit union blocked my card for what they deemed unusual activity when I bought gas last week. So they said it should work now. Can I try again to book the room now?
A3: I'll check ... Yes, go ahead, you can book now.

What payment options do I have as an individual tourist?
You need to pay with your own credit card that has your name on it: no cash, prepaid cards, unemployment , employment cards, or someone else's card. Our credit card system will decline a prepaid card.

What types of credit cards do you accept?
We accept most major credit cards and debit cards, except Switch.

Everything starts in the center of Temple Square; North Temple Street- passes on the north side of the SLC main temple, South Temple Street on the south of the temple, West Temple on the West of the temple, Main Street is the same as East Temple.

Kitchen
I have a question about the kitchen(s), will there be pots and cooking utensils available to use?
Yes-each kitchen has two cabinets with a sign that says: "Travelers Cookware"; besides that each room has some plates, cups, and silverware.
Other

Are guests allowed in the common areas and/or rooms?
No, you cannot bring any visitors into the building or room; if you want to bring a visitor into the building or room, you need to pay an extra $9/day fee. Exceptions: during check-in, just for a few minutes, but your friend(s) needs to leave, right after you check-in, or we may have to charge you the extra fee. FYI: Even though we don't have a 24/7 front desk person, we regularly monitor the common areas, thru our cameras.

Cold Season...Keep Warm, Keep Well
1. At home several layers of clothing (rather than just one very thick layer) will keep you warm during the day by trapping warm air between them.
2. During cold weather, hot meals and plenty of hot drinks will make you feel warmer inside.
3. Always wear a cap, hat or headscarf outside, as a very large proportion of your body heat is lost through the top of the head.
4. It is also important to wear strong, warm shoes or boots when you go outside. If your boots are roomy enough you can put on an extra pair of socks as well. Source: http://www.doh.gov.uk/kwkw1.htm.

Heaters...Is there a heater in my room? How do I turn it on? or could you do so for each room?
All the rooms have automatic heaters. They are on a program that turns them on and off automatically.
We have already turned them on. When the temperature goes down below a minimum programmed, then the heater turns on automatically.

Each time of the day is different. If you are in the house all day, then please make sure you wear warm clothers, drink hot drinks, wear a hat, and use warm boots (please read "Keep warm, keep well" article below).

NOTE: You are not allowed to bring in your own electric heater into the room. The only heater we allow our guests to bring into the room, is Mr. Heater that runs on gas. You can buy it at Lowes hardware store.

Hostel...What is a hostel?
1. A supervised, inexpensive lodging place for travelers, especially young travelers. 2. An inn; a hotel. 1 1

Hot Season...Is there air conditioning in any of your Guesthouses?
We have swamp coolers instead, that cool the common areas; the rooms have fans inside.

Housekeeping...I will be extending. I was wondering if my sheets could be changed tomorrow also?
I'm sorry, we don't do that- we only change the linen (sheets) of your room and clean it, on the day you checkout of the room. Hotels do daily housekeeping on their occupied rooms, but they charge a lot more than we do- we're a budget accommodation. We pass on the savings to you.

I have a mountain bike, where can I put it?
You can keep it in your room, as long you don't make a mess on the building floors. If you keep it outside, please make sure you lock and hide it, out of site of passer bys eyes ("Out of site, out of mind")- we are not responsible for it.

Parking...Do you have a parking lot for your guests?
Yes, we have our own parking lot for our guests at no additional cost. If you book a room for a whole week you can get free covered parking at Camelot Guest House or 1700 South Guest House, depending on avaialbility.

Work exchange....Do you have any work exchange opportunities?
We do not offer work exchange.

What are the office hours for you guys?
Office hours vary. At the moment we are understaffed. I'm the only one doing the work. I can call you in a few, after I'm done helping housekeepers with the list of rooms to clean.

QUALITY: "It is unwise to pay too much, but it is unwise to pay too little. When you pay too much, you loose a little money; that is all. When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything. Because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It cannot be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run and if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better." John Ruskin 1819 - 1900

584) This hostel is GREAT! If you are an experienced, autonomous, and courteous traveller who is looking for a safe, simple, convenient, and quiet place to stay, it is a "must-do." The self check-in is very convenient, and the owner/employees are very accessible by phone/text. My private room was very comfortable, and the facility has many shared bathrooms. 574) The nearest tram stop is less than a block away with access to all three tram lines (Red, Green, and Blue), so you can get to any of the major tourist attractions downtown in minutes. The building has its own door code so only guests can come in, and each room has a deadbolt and a key for each guest. You check yourself in on the computers in the hall, and when you check out, all you have to do is straighten your room, leave the key in its safe, and get out before 10 AM. Easy.
