"I recently had the pleasure
of spending time at the Camelot rooming house in Salt Lake City,
I was working on a project for Sarcos a medical and robots research
group at the Univ of Utah. I live in California and travel a lot,
so the idea of spending months in a hotel just wasn't what I wanted.
I had never looked for a rooming house but knowing I was going to
be near the Univ I thought I would just give it a try.
While looking through craigslist.com I found a posting for the Camelot,
I bounced a few e-mails back and forth with Arthur. After a few
more phone calls I thought why not, so I moved in and I have to
say it turned out better then I had hoped. The people were friendly
the location could not have been better, within a few blocks there
is just about everything you could want, shopping, restaurants,
parks, light rail, a "GREAT" city library, and my favorite
two excellent coffee bars. If you have never been Salt Lake like
me the city is very walker and transit friendly, which makes the
location of the Camelot excellent. I had driven a car out but could
have done without it.
That other stuff you might want to know Arthur the owner lives on
site and is a very up-front guy, it's the kind of place your mother
would approve of.
I would recommended this anyone needing to spend time in Salt Lake,
I know that if he has space Arthur will rent rooms for a few days
I think he is listed in the Hostel Guild.

Do you rent to people who have children?
Yes, depending on availability- Children need to (1)
be well behaved and (2) accompanied by an adult at all
times, when in the common areas. Crying babies can only
stay in certain rooms (17S) that are located away from
other guests, and that don't disturb other guests.
Do
you rent to people who have pets?
Yes, depending on availability- we only have a couple
of pet friendly rooms. If you are just staying for up
to seven nights, then we just charge you an extra pet
fee of about $9. You need to keep your pet in the cage
at all times (while in the room). If you are staying
longer, then for
each pet you have, the following applies: 1) a $50 refundable
cash deposit + $5 cash, 2) plus an extra fee $10/night
if you book for less than 30 nights, or $5/night if
you book for 30 nights; 3) Your pet needs to be well
behaved, and not left unattended in the room or common
areas- you can leave your pet in the room as long as
it is in a cage or crate. 4) You need to clean any messes
your pet makes in the room or in the yard outside. 5)
You need to check-in before 11 p.m. so that we can collect
the $50 cash deposit. NOTE: Pets are only allowed in
our pet friendly rooms for a maximum of 30 nights.
Do you have to be LDS (Mormon) to be approved? No. We have tenants that are not Mormon. Do you rent to felons or approve applicants with misdemeanors? No; Felons need not apply. We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. How do I rebook a room? 1) E-mail or call us for availability;
2) If you are available in the morning (after 9 a.m.),
you can have one of the managers (John or Isabel), get
your credit card imprint and signature from you. They
check the rooms from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you're not
available in the morning after 9 a.m., then;
3) You can rebook the room online at , , or .
Note: option 2) saves you a booking fee of 1.00 EUR.
How
can I see one of the rooms?
You can see pictures of some example rooms at www.UT123.com
or you can book a room for one night and check it out;
if you like the room you can extend your stay (before
10 a.m.). Our staff is very busy helping our current
travelers- if you want us to stop what we're doing to
show you a room, then we will charge you a $5 non-refundable
showing fee that can be applied towards your booking.
Please call us at 801-688-6196, 1 hour or 30 min before
you ready to see the room from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
I am between homes. Do you have a room or dorm bed in any of your properties that would be available for someone in my situation? I'm looking for my least expensive alternative. How much would it cost? Yes we do, you can get prices and you can book here with a credit card. We rent all the time to people who are between homes. This allows you time to make sure you move into a good situation without having to rush into a bad roommate or long lease.
I looked through the profile form that I have to fill in before booking a room, but the thing is that I don't know yet what time I arrive in SLC. May I write an approximate time?
Yes you may write an approximate time, as long as you
check-in after 3 p.m. The time requested by the booking
engine is just so we can know more a less at what time
you will be checking in the room.
I'm interested and was wondering if you could call me and feed me a little more information. Please go to our website at www.UT123.com and look for your answers there...if afterwards you still have questions then please e-mail us any specific questions. Is there a phone number I can call to get some more information? If we cannot answer your questions through our website (www.UT123.com) or through e-mail, then we'll call you.
My credit card is Visa Classic and I have only US dollars on it (but it said on you website that a booking fee of 1.00 EUR will be required) So I hope I can book a room with this card? Yes, you can book the room with any card that has dollars or any other currency. Q: What is the most efficient method to check availability, e-mail or phone? A: Always better to e-mail us at Artur4@hotmail.com the dates and specifics for the booking (number of people, and types of rooms needed); this information will allow us to correctly and quickly check online availability. Only call us at (801) 688-6196 during business hours if it is an emergency. Why can't I book a room after hours? All the other hostels in SLC have their office closed after hours- we do the same. Hotels book rooms late at night, not budget accommodations like our guest houses. Why did you cancel my booking and give my room away? I turned up at your hostel only to be sent away, especially when I arrived at 9 p.m. at night.
We are a small Hostel and we do not overbook. So when
someone's
card is declined, we have to cancel the booking so others
can book. We run our Hostel via internet, from 9 a.m.
to 4 p.m. after that time we do not process bookings
for the same day. This is why travels book in advance,
we charge their card and then they can do their own
self check-in.
Why do you charge $5 extra if we are a walk-in (pay in person)? When you pay in person it costs $5 more than if you book online. I am sure you can understand that it takes less work for us to process an online booking than a walk-in booking. Online bookings cost $5 less than if you pay in person or over the phone.

| | How do I use the quick check-in PC?
After 3 p.m., on your arrival date, you can
use your confirmation/booking number to get your room
number and keybox combination from the quick check-in
computer inside the hostel. It's as easy as
1
2
3
.
1) Open the Internet browser, 2) Type in your booking
reference number, 3) Get your room number and keybox
combination.
No other guest house that I know of, has this quick
check-in system; A few hotels have started to successfully
integrate this revolutionary system- they are using
"Self-service
kiosks in hotel lobbies". The quick check-in
system is similar to the check-in kiosks you find in
the airport. Our travelers love it; You can check-in
at 12 a.m., 2 a.m., or any other time (after 3 p.m.)
without having to consult a staff member. If you have
difficulty checking in, the concierge or one of the
management will help you.
| “This
is really a cool hostel (guest house), the new creative
check-in system is just like playing a treasure
finding game! I think this place is even more than
a hostel. It also trains you to self-discipline
and resolve the problems independently. It is in
a very convenient location and has complete equipment,
including kitchen, laundry, WiFi and bicycle...
you just can't miss such a cool place and a self
test!” -Jacob Hsu, Taichung, Taiwan |
How does the keybox combination work? Just push the code on the key safe to access the key inside the key safe. I want to make a reservation for Sunday night. However, after tomorrow morning I won't have access to e-mail until I arrive in SLC. How can I get any codes that I will need? As soon as you make a reservation, the booking engine will give you the address, directions, and keyless code to get in the building (the building is always locked). Once in the building you have access to a PC with free Internet, that will allow you to access your e-mail account and get your express self check-in instructions (room number and keycode). Note: The self check-in instructions are e-mailed to you after we charge your credit card. I will arrive in SLC at midnight (I will travel by Amtrak from Chicago) will that be to late to check-in to the room? No, it will not be too late to check-in to the room after midnight; you can use the automated self check-in system, as long as you can book the room with your own valid credit card that has your name on it (no prepaid cards); we charge your credit card three days prior to your arrival. Cash bookings only before 10 p.m., and you have to call first, on your arrival date, to check for availability. I will get there very late at night, will I be able to check-in? Yes, as long as you remember to write down two things: 1) The building entrance code and 2) Your confirmation number. You'll need these to get in the building and use the quick check-in computer. Is your guest house 24 hours? If our flight comes in at 1 a.m., and a few days later we must leave at 4 a.m., is this going to be a problem?
No
problem, because you can check-in anytime after
3 p.m., by using our self quick check-in computer (for
online bookings only, no walk-ins) ; and you can check-out
anytime by following the simple self-checkout instructions
on the yellow sheet, outside your room door.
My plane arrives at 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday night. So, I'll probably be about 2:45 a.m. before I get over there. Do I just sneak into my dorm room quietly? What I've noticed that works really well is if you have a cell phone that has a decent back light on it. The lamplight is good but if you really want to be discreet, a small light really does the job.
What
time can we check-in to the building and into our room?
Can I check in before 3 p.m.?
You can only check-in to the building and into
your room after 3 p.m. If you need to check-in earlier
or need to store your luggage, then please e-mail us
ASAP at artur4@hotmail.com.
Most rooms are occupied before new guests arrive, we
need to allow time for previous traveler(s) to checkout
and we need enough time to make sure the room is ready
for new guests. If you really need to check-in the room
very early in the morning, then you can pay for the
previous night.
When do I get the directions and conditions to the property? Right after you book the room with a credit card, the booking engine shows you the directions and property conditions; you'll have the entrance code to get in the building that will allow you to do your own express self check-in. This way if you have to leave on your trip, you already know how to get in the building (you have the keyless code to the building); there is a computer with free Internet that will allow you to check your e-mail to get the room number and key code to your booked room.
Why do I need to pay an extra $5 for booking over the phone? You are paying an extra five dollars because your booking is not an online booking. |
|
| | Can I stay in the building after the 10 a.m. check-out time? No. After 10 a.m. you need to checkout of the room and the building. We need to get everything ready for our guests that will be checking in later in the day.
Can I extend my booking after 10 a.m.? No. You cannot stay in the room without a new booking; If you don't book before your 10 a.m. checkout time, you'll need to pay a penalty of anywhere from $10 to $40.
What
time do we have to check out of the room?
Checkout by 10 a.m.. If you need to stay longer
please let us know before 10 a.m. so we can check for availability.
What
is your cancelation policy?
=====================
Cancellations:
=====================
Must be made at least 48 hours before your scheduled
arrival day. If you miss this deadline, we are entitled
to charge the equivalent of the first night of your
booked nights. Cancellations or changes made after check-in
are subject to a 100% charge. No
refunds for unused nights, including those resulting
from delayed check-in or early check-out will be given.

| I have a question about the kitchen(s), will there be pots and cooking utensils available to use? Yes-each kitchen has two cabinets with a sign that says: "Travelers Cookware"; besides that each room has some plates, cups, and silverware. |

|
|
Are
guests allowed in the rooms and common areas?
No,
you cannot bring any visitors into the building or the
room; if you want to bring a visitor into the room or
the building, you need to pay $9/day fee.
Cold
Season...Keep Warm, Keep Well
1.
At home several layers of clothing (rather than just
one very thick layer) will keep you warm during the
day by trapping warm air between them.
2. During cold weather, hot meals and plenty of hot
drinks will make you feel warmer inside.
3. Always wear a cap, hat or headscarf outside, as a
very large proportion of your body heat is lost through
the top of the head.
4. It is also important to wear strong, warm shoes or
boots when you go outside. If your boots are roomy enough
you can put on an extra pair of socks as well. Source:
http://www.doh.gov.uk/kwkw1.htm.
Heaters...Is
there a heater in my room? How do I turn it on? or could
you do so for each room?
All the rooms have automatic heaters. They are on a
program that turns them on and off automatically.
We have already turned them on. When the temperature
goes down below a minimum programmed, then the heater
turns on automatically.
Each time of the day is different; there are four programs
for each day. The heater keeps the room warmer in the
morning and in the afternoon because most people are
out and about visiting the city, working, or in school.
If you are in the house all day, then please make sure
you wear warm clothers, drink hot drinks, wear a hat,
and use warm boots (please read "Keep warm,
keep well" article below).
NOTE: You are not allowed to bring in your own electric
heater into the room. The only heater we allow our guests
to bring into the room, is Mr. Heater that runs on gas.
You can buy it at Lowes
hardware store.
Hostel...What
is a hostel?
1. A supervised, inexpensive lodging place for travelers,
especially young travelers. 2. An inn; a hotel. 1
1
Hot
Season...Is there air conditioning in any of your Guesthouses?
We have swamp coolers instead, that cool the common
areas; the rooms have fans inside.
Housekeeping...I
will be extending. I was wondering if my sheets could
be changed tomorrow also?
I'm sorry, we don't do that- we only change the linen
(sheets) of your room and clean it, on the day you checkout
of the room. Hotels do daily housekeeping on their occupied
rooms, but they charge a lot more than we do- we're
a budget accommodation. We pass on the savings to you.
Parking...Do
you have a parking lot for your guests?
Yes, we have our own parking
lot for our guests at no additional cost. If you
book a room for a whole week you can get free covered
parking at
Camelot Guest House or 1700
South Guest House, depending on avaialbility.
Work
exchange....Do you have any work exchange opportunities?
We only offer work exchange opportunities to existing
guests...After you move in and we get to know you, then
we might extend that opportunity to you.

| | QUALITY: "It is unwise to pay too much, but it is unwise to pay too little. When you pay too much, you loose a little money; that is all. When you pay too little you sometimes lose everything. Because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. It cannot be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run and if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better." John Ruskin 1819 - 1900 Do you have a printer available? Yes. We charge 25 cents per sheet; minimum $1 for one to four sheets printed. Do you rent notebooks (laptops), televisions, and bicycles? Yes, we rent bicycles for $5/day, notebook computers with WiFi for $7/week or $20/day, and TVs for $20/week.
Storage
closet... After I checkout of my room, how do
I get a storage closet?
(1) After you completely checked out of your room, (2)
call us during regular business hours and give us permission

| | Can I make a reservation for a friend or a relative? Yes, of course but please remember to mention the name of your friend and the name of the cardholder, who guarantees and pays for the reservation. Do you accept group reservations? Yes, with sufficient notification, we welcome groups. How long does it take to complete the booking procedure? We complete the reservations within few hours, if we receive an online reservation from BOOK NOW - during our opening hours (Monday – Friday 9:00 – 17:00 MST). A maximum time we take to complete the reservation is up to 24 hours due to the time zone. If I pay online, will the system show the total amount I am being debited before I approve the transaction? No, the system will give you a total price before taxes and fees. We add a total of 16% for taxes and fees. Is it necessary to book in advance? Yes, especially during the main seasons, when we are usually booked up, we recommend you book a room two months in advance. Is it possible to pay you in cash when I check-in instead of paying online? I can use a debit card, but would rather pay cash and get a receipt. We do not allow walk-ins. The building is always locked. The keyless entry code to get in the building will show up on the screen immediately after you book the room with a credit card. After we charge your card, authorize.net will send you an electronic receipt via e-mail. Is it possible to pay with cash/money order? I'm in the room and I'd like to extend my stay. If you want to pay with cash- you have to do the following: 1. Let us know how many nights you need, so we can give you a total amount due with taxes and fees + $50 extra refundable deposit + $5 in cash, 2. Get a money order* for the total amount due with tax and fees + $50 extra deposit, payable to Arthur Morais, 3. Call us and schedule a time to give the money order + $5 cash to management. This has to be done before 10AM on your checkout day. *You can get a money order at a gas station (ex: 7 Eleven) or grocery store (Ex: Wal-Mart)

It is safer for you to reserve two days before the date of check in – for last minute reservations please contact our reservation department artur4@hotmail.com.
